sGB News & Updates

20th January 2015
I've updated the code in the guestbook admin panel (Help section) to both update the paths for the help images, and to add a new section for those needing reminders regarding the code used to add the guestbook to your website, and a reminder of the links themselves.
20th August 2009 - Notice of interruption.
Just a note folks, the sGB e-mail facilities will be unavailable between approx 0700-0900 GMT. This means you will not be able to register a new account, or for those already having an account, will not receive new post notifications (if enabled).

Details at: http://hphosts.blogspot.com/2009/08/important-notice-of-downtime.html
16th January 2009 - sGB is back, but all accounts are gone
I'm sorry to say folks, due to issues in November of last year, the sGB service has been offline.

Sadly, whilst I've now got the service back online, I was unable to save the accounts. As such, you will need to re-register.
6th March 2008 - More anti-spam updates
As mentioned yesterday, I've just finished making the final changes to the guestbooks. These changes include;

1. Blocking .ru and .cn addresses (these form the majority of the spam e-mail addresses)
2. Modified spam routines to block http instead of http:
3. Integrated stopforumspam.com AND fspamlist.com blacklists

Should one spill through the new routines, please consider adding the spammers particulars (IP, name and e-mail) to the above mentioned blacklists.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via the support forums at;

http://forum.hosts-file.net/viewforum.php?f=31

5th March 2008 - More updates and cleanup in progress
It's been a while since I last updated this site, and looking over the current membership shows it's majorly overdue - I must apologise for this.

I have to confess, due to a new fiance, and a baby on the way, along with many other things, I've not had much time for updating this site. This will be changing as I don't want to let this site slide again.

Over the next 12 hours I'll be running through with some major cleanup to get rid of the accounts created by bots, and cleanup any spam that may be on your guestbooks. Then once done, will begin work on a few improvements (should all be done in 48 hours).
9th May 2007 - Updates implemented
Sorry for the delay folks. I've just finished implementing the feature that allows you to require approval for all posts made to your guestbook.

The new feature can be found at;

Filter > Anti Spam

When enabled, a new post will not be displayed until it is approved by you (not even a hint that it is there).

To approve new posts, you can go to the Visitors option in your admin area and click the blue "A".

If you have any questions or problems with the latest changes, please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

1st May 2007 - Updates coming soon
Just an FYI folks, in the next few days, you will see a new feature in your administration area.

The new feature will allow you to require approval before a post to your guestbook is published (whether public or private (admin only)).

I'm hoping to have the update implemented by Thursday (3rd May) but if you have an idea for a feature not currently present in the meantime, feel free to get in touch.

I am also planning to re-write the sGB website itself but at present, this is not even in the development stages (strictly planning stage at the moment).

21st April 2007 - Registration bug fixed
An e-mail received a few minutes ago notified myself of a bug within the registration procedure. Unfortunately during the last update, I broke the registration routines, which prevented new registrations.

I would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. This error has corrected as of 14:56 (GMT London).

11th April 2007 - Guestbooks updated
Just a note to let you all know, I've implemented some new functions into the guestbooks to prevent spammers and form exploits. If you notice any problems, please let me know.

If you have any questions or problems with the latest changes, please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

7th April 2007 - Major spam run again
I would like to warn those that are not yet aware, there seems to be a whole bunch of edgits going randomly through the sGB users guestbooks, adding what can only be described as a huge amount of spam.

I've cleaned up as much as I could hunt down so will apologise in advance if any of you notice any non-spam posts missing. The cleanup routine I've written to do the job will remove any post containing "http://" or "www.".

To help prevent spam, please ensure you keep the filters enabled, and wherever possible, ensure URL's (http:, ftp: etc) are blocked in the posts.

As an addendum, an excellent additional way to prevent spammers is to block their net-blocks, as per the example in your administration area.

If you have any questions or problems with the latest changes, please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

15th September 2006 - Major bug fixed
I would like to inform everyone, thanks to a notification from an sGB user, I've fixed a major bug that allowed scripts to be entered into the name and e-mail fields. Previously, only the comments field was filtered (the e-mail field would default to "Not Given" if no @ character was found, but wasn't filtered in the same manner as the comments field). This meant someone could enter a URL encased in script tags, and have it executed when the page was opened.

All guestbooks have been updated to prevent this occuring in future.

If you have any questions or problems with the latest changes, please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

22nd August 2006 - Bug fix and modifications
I'm happy to report, I've fixed a bug with the changing of the passwords, and have additionally, made a slight modification to the guestbooks. I was originally going to add an option to remove the "Copyright" footer, but instead, decided simply to remove it completely.

If you have any questions or problems with the latest changes, please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

24th July 2006 - Contact form and e-mail issues
I would like to apologise to anyone that has e-mailed me recently concerning sGB. Unfortunately it seems my mail server decided it didn't want to work properly. The issue was identified a few days ago and hopefully, is now resolved.

If you e-mail me and do not get a response within 48 hours (it's usually within 1-3), please contact me via the ticket system below and let me know.

26th June 2006 - Server downtime
I would like to apologise to sGB users concerning the downtime of the sGB service between 14:30 yesterday and approx 00:30 this morning.

Due to a critical network error on the FastHosts infrastructure, all I.T. Mate websites, with the exception of the Intranet, was unavailable for approx 10 or so hours. This meant sGB guestbooks were of course, unavailable. Thankfully FastHosts, in co-operation with Telewest (their provider) resolved the problem relatively quickly. As luck would have it however, my Intranet suffered downtime aswell between the hours of 05:00 and 11:30 this morning due to an as yet unknown "glitch" in the PlusNet/BT connection (neither seem to want to admit there was a problem thus far).

The downtime to the Intranet, whilst not impacting as much on the guestbooks, did mean the e-mail facilities were unavailable until I woke up and reset the connection. This again, has so far stayed relatively stable since so hopefully there will not be further interruptions.

As a note to sGB users in general, should this occur again, I can still be contacted via the Intranet at the address below.

20th June 2006 - Guestbook spammers
I would like to warn those that are not yet aware, there seems to be a whole bunch of edgits going randomly through the sGB users guestbooks, adding what can only be described as a huge amount of spam.

I've cleaned up as much as I could hunt down so will apologise in advance if any of you notice any non-spam posts missing. the cleanup routine I've written to do the job will remove any post containing "http://", and many other spam related items (medication and gambling spam specifically).

To help prevent spam, please ensure you keep the filters enabled, and wherever possible, ensure URL's are blocked in the posts.

As an addendum, an excellent additional way to prevent spammers is to block their net-blocks, as per the example in your administration area.

25th November 2005 - Add layout bug fixed
I received an e-mail this morning from Luís Ferreira, a new user of the sGB service. This e-mail informed me of a bug that was most likely introduced after the previous update (the feature affected was unrelated to the update so I did not expect it to be affected).

The bug itself, caused an error to occur when trying to add a new layout. In addition to this, I also found and fixed a seperate bug that saw new layouts, unable to be set as default.

I would like to say thankyou to Mr Ferreira, and apologise to all other sGB users that experienced the bug. As of approximately an hour ago, this bug is now fixed.

26th October 2005 - Guestbook updates
As mentioned previously, the 14th was meant to have seen updates to the guestbook service. Whilst one of the planned updates was implemented, the rest were not. Unfortunately there was nothing I could do to prevent the delays and would thus like to apologise if any of you are wondering how to access the new features.

The features mentioned have now been given an implementation date of November 31st. In the meantime, those both currently registered, and those thinking about registering should note, the Spambot Harvester Protection update mentioned on the 14th was implemented but is NOT enabled by default. To enable this feature, edit your chosen layout and select from the Spambot Harvester Protection options shown in the screenshot below, to enable this.

Spambot Harvester Protection settings

14th October 2005 - Service interruption
An update is scheduled for implementation at 18:00 (6pm) GMT London that may mean users experiencing problems when accessing or administering guestbooks.

Updates to be implemented include disabling and customisation of the e-mail obfuscation feature (requested), customisation of the e-mail server that is used for notifications, and enabling/disabling of the copyright notice. An additional update is also planned that will see a change to the "Help" link featured on guestbooks.

As an advance notice, a major update to the sGB guestbook service is planned for implementation on or around, Christmas 2005. This update will see the addition of provisions for customising the input fields on your guestbook and if I can get some volunteers, an option to have the sGB guestbook in your own language.

18th July 2005 - IP lookup feature
It is with regret that I have had to remove the IP lookup feature that was recently introduced. Unfortunately, the provider of this service has now stopped allowing dynamic lookups.

I am currently in the process of writing an IP lookup feature for the sGB guestbooks and hope to have it online soon.

10th July 2005 - Guestbook updates completed
I am pleased to announce, the planned updates to the sGB guestbook's are now completed.

Should you find any problems, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

7th July 2005 - Guestbook updates
As previously mentioned, additions were planned to the current sGB guestbooks. I am pleased to announce, as trials on a select few accounts have proven successful, updates to existing accounts will begin tomorrow.

The updates will likely take upto 3 or so days to complete due to the number of accounts, however, I will try and get them done with as little interruption as possible.

Accounts registered after 21:00 (GMT London) today already have these updates and as such, are not affected by this.

14th June 2005 - Registration bug fixed
An e-mail received a few minutes ago notified myself of a bug within the registration procedure. This bug basically prevented applications being processed correctly. This bug has been found and fixed.

I would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. This error has corrected as of 01:13 (GMT London).

26th May 2005 - New account registration bugs
Due to an e-mail received today, I noticed a major bug in the accounts for new registrants. This bug basically meant, when a user attempted to view their guestbook they were presented with a blank screen instead of the guestbook page/admin page. All users registering between May 20th and today have unfortunately been affected by this.

I would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. This error has corrected as of 11:17 (GMT London).

11th May 2005 - Upcoming feature updates
Although a little later than planned due to unforseen circumstances, I would like to announce plans for the following feature updates.
  1. Multi-post delete when blocking posters IP
  2. Reverse lookup on blocked IP's
  3. Additional Notes for blocked IP's
  4. New post notifications
  5. Private/public
Multi-post delete when blocking posters IP

At present when you block an IP, you must then go and delete their posts individually. This will be changed so all posts by the visitor you blocked, can be deleted at the same time as blocking their IP.

Reverse lookup on blocked IP's

This will be an update to the IP blacklist feature and will basically allow you to click on an IP in your blacklist and have their ISP details returned to you.

Additional Notes for blocked IP's

This should actually have been included in the first place but was not. The AN feature will basically mean you can add notes to a blocked IP's record (i.e. why they were blocked).

New post notifications

At present, new post notifications are only available to those with an it-mate.co.uk e-mail address. This update will see the removal of this restriction.

Private/public

This update will allow your visitors to decide whether their post is viewable by everyone, or just yourself.

Most of the updates mentioned above, will require updates to your personal database as such, this is going to take considerable time to complete. Assuming all goes to plan, these updates will be complete by the end of August 2005.

20th March 2005 - Password bug
I recently received an e-mail from a user, advising me of an error when trying to change their password. I would like to let everyone know, this bug has now been found and fixed.

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience.

20th December 2004 - sGB updates
Current users with more than 20 posts in their guestbooks may have noticed a little change to their guestbooks. I am pleased to say, I have finally gotten round to adding the paging feature (this prevents all posts being on one page which thus, speeds up the guestbook load times). I have also found and fixed a minor niggle concerning the return key.

I am however, looking for new ideas for the guestbook service, as such, should you think of a feature that would come in handy or would improve the current guestbooks, please do not hesitate to mention it to us.

6th October 2004 - sGB Documentation
I am happy to announce, the sGB documentation is now online. Although most of what is covered, is covered elsewhere in your guestbook, I hope this will give a brief overview of what is what, and what is where.

Should you find something that is NOT answered, please feel free to contact us.

19th July 2004 - sGB Launch
I am pleased to say, the new sGB website is now finished, and from what I have been able to tell, everything is working as it should.

As the sGB service is new, I will not be suprised if there are a few problems here and there. However, these will be sorted out as soon as they are identified.
